Women cancer prevention and pharmaceutical contribution BJPS
Lourenço,Andrezza Viviany.
In Brazil, many cases of breast and cervical cancers are only diagnosed in advanced stages. Information on prevention of cancer in women is increasingly available. However, prevention or early treatment alternatives are often not practiced. This study investigated the issues hindering the practice of prevention against cancer in women. A qualitative method was employed in this exploratory and descriptive study. The sample included thirty-three randomly selected women undergoing treatment. The survey data was collected at the South Parana Institute of Oncology, Ponta Grossa - PR in September 2007 using a semi-structured individual interview after approval by the Research Ethics Committee of the Brazilian College of Systemic Studies - CBES, Curitiba - PR,...

Wound healing activity in rabbits and antimicrobial activity of Hibiscus hirtus ethanolic extract BJPS
Ravishankar,Kakaraparthy; Kiranmayi,Garlanka Venkata Naga; Prasad,Yejella Rajendra; Devi,Lankadi.
Generally, Plants have immense potential in the wounds management and treatment. In Chinese herbology, Hibiscus plant is a potent herb and have a good medicinal values but not scientifically approached. The present study aims to investigate the wound healing and antimicrobial activity of ethanolic extract of Hibiscus hirtus Linn.(HH). Wound healing activity was carried out by excision, incision and burn wound models. Antimicrobial activity was determined by cup plate method. Healing rate was assessed from the rate of wound contraction, epithelialization rate, tensile strength, hexosamine and hydroxyproline content. From the obtained results, it was indicated that the wound contraction and increased tensile strength of Hibiscus hirtus extract exhibits potent...

Wound-healing evaluation of ointment from Stryphnodendron adstringens (barbatimão) in rat skin BJPS
Hernandes,Luzmarina; Pereira,Luciene Marques da Silva; Palazzo,Fabiana; Mello,João Carlos Palazzo de.
This study evaluated the cicatrizant effect of an ointment containing 1% of the ethyl-acetate fraction extracted from the stem bark of "barbatimão" (Stryphnodendron adstringens), in wounds made in the skin of rats, after 4, 7 and 10 days of treatment. Control wounds were treated with a base ointment without extract. The proliferation of keratinocytes in the area of reepithelialization was evaluated by counting the number of epithelial cells that were blocked in metaphase by vincristine sulfate. The length of the reepithelialized margin and the contraction of the wound were measured. Topical application of the "barbatimão" ointment stimulated proliferation of the keratinocytes, but had no effect on the length of the epithelium or on the contraction of the...

ABSTRACT The present study evaluated the antimicrobial susceptibility profile, β-lactamase production, and genetic diversity of Enterobacteriaceae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Acinetobacter spp. using phenotypic identification, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, and β-lactamase phenotypic detection. Isolates were obtained from patients in an intensive care unit in a hospital in southern Brazil. Bacterial genomic DNA was extracted, followed by the genotypic detection of carbapenemases and enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus-polymerase chain reaction (ERIC-PCR). Fifty-six isolates (26 Klebsiella pneumoniae, five Escherichia coli, three Enterobacter aerogenes, nine P. aeruginosa, and 13 Acinetobacter spp.) were evaluated. The phenotypic...
